7 confirmed dead in mine pit collapse in Ashanti Region

At least seven people were killed and several others injured when a mine pit collapsed on illegal small-scale miners in Ghana’s Ashanti Region late Wednesday, an official said.

Augustine Gakpetor, deputy district director of the National Disaster Management Organization, told the media that the accident occurred in the Kasotie area at around 6:00 p.m. local time.

He said a rescue mission was launched immediately, with about five miners rescued alive and receiving treatment.

The bodies of the deceased have been taken to a local hospital morgue, while rescue operations continue, Gakpetor added.  Enditem
