Ghana’s senior male national football team, the Black Stars, finished top of the Group I league log of the African qualifiers late Sunday to secure a historic fifth World Cup qualification.

Black Stars defeated Comoros 1-0 in the final match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium.

With a vociferous fan behind them, the Black Stars made their intentions clear to pick all three points of the day despite needing a point to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Comoros, being the only side to have beaten Ghana in the qualifiers, however, put up a spirited performance and nearly scored in the third minute of the game.

Despite the subsequent pressure from the Ghanaians, the first half ended in a scoreless draw.

Back from recess, Tottenham midfielder Mohammed Kudus scored in the 47th minute to the delight of the almost 35,000 spectators at the stadium.

With the win, Ghana tops Group I with 25 points and secures the sole ticket from the group to qualify for their fifth World Cup.

Madagascar finished second with 19 points, with Mali securing third position with 18 points. Comoros, the Central African Republic, and Chad follow with 15, 8, and one point, respectively.

Ghana participated in the 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022 FIFA World Cups. The West African country’s best performance was in 2010 when the team got to the quarterfinal stage. Enditem
