Morocco and Scotland supporters arriving at Boston Stadium ahead of their World Cup clash on Friday offered very different views on their teams’ chances of lifting the trophy.
Footage shows fans from both countries heading to the stadium, singing, chanting and celebrating before the game starts. Supporters join each other’s festivities, waving flags and dancing outside the stadium.
Asked about their prospects in the tournament, many Scotland fans admitted winning the World Cup was ‘unlikely’. Moroccan supporters, by contrast, were far more confident about their team’s chances.
“We have the quality of the players and we have the passion for football. So yes, I would say yes, we do have the capacity,” one fan said.
Another fan was already looking beyond Scotland and assessing the challenges ahead.
“If we get through to the next round, France are very strong, but Argentina worries me more,” he noted. “With Messi playing so well, at 38 he looks like he’s 18, and he’ll be very difficult to stop.”
Morocco ultimately backed up that confidence on the pitch, as Ismael Saibari scored after just two minutes to seal a 1-0 victory at Boston Stadium, moving the Atlas Lions onto four points from their opening two Group C matches. Scotland remain on 3 points.
The result strengthened Morocco’s position in the race for a place in the knockout stage ahead of their final group match against Haiti.
Scotland’s hopes of progressing are still alive, but Steve Clarke’s side now face a decisive final group game against Brazil as they look to reach the next round.
