Surging torrents smash shops and damage homes in Morocco’s Oum Er-Rbia springs

Massive flash floods swept through the Oum Er-Rbia springs near Khenifra on Wednesday after heavy thunderstorms triggered violent water surges across the area.

Footage shows raging torrents crashing through the site, with damaged shops and debris left in their wake.

A resident speaking from behind the camera said: “This morning there were people here, and they had cooking equipment and bedding with them, and this evening, glory be to God, the situation changed, everything is gone.”

Several shops beside the watercourse were destroyed as floodwaters swept away parts of the structures, leaving rubble behind. Reports also said homes and makeshift shops close to the river were damaged.

Media reports said a weather warning had cautioned that unstable conditions could continue, with further heavy rainfall possible and particular concern for low-lying areas and locations close to valleys and waterways.
