Organised labour urges govt to replace minimum wage with living wage

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

General Secretary of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC), Joshua Ansah, on Thursday called on the government to replace the minimum wage with a living wage.

He made the comment during the celebration of the 2025 May Day celebration at the Black Star square in the Ghanaian capital of Accra under the theme, “Resetting pay and working conditions in Ghana: The role of stakeholders.”

According to him, the government’s reset agenda will remain incomplete if concerns of the working people vis-à-vis the salary disparities between Article 71 office holders and ordinary workers are not adequately addressed to bridge the gap.

Brother Ansah observed that the current harsh economic conditions necessitate a comprehensive review of salaries, as many workers take home meagre incomes at the end of each month.

“Owing to the harsh economic conditions facing the ordinary Ghanaian worker, I will urge the government to replace the minimum wage with a living wage, which is better. The resetting agenda can be completed if the government does not start with the workers and makes sure that workers’ conditions are better,” he stated.

He also called for a comprehensive overhaul of the pension scheme, which had also placed the ordinary Ghanaian worker at a disadvantageous position. Enditem
