OSP says hasn’t received a letter on Ken-Ofori-Atta’s health status

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) said on Tuesday that it has not received a purported letter or medical report on former Finance Minister, Mr Kenneth Ofori-Atta, which has been circulating in sections of the online media.

A medical report dated May 14, 2025, signed by Dr Ahmed Abdalrhim—an internal medicine specialist affiliated with the Section of International Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in the United States of America- surfaced, claiming that Ofori-Atta is unfit to travel.

The report, which appears to be on official Mayo Clinic letterhead, was allegedly intended to explain the former Finance Minister’s inability to appear before the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for a scheduled meeting on 2 June 2025.

But in a statement, the OSP clarified that it has not received any official medical documentation from Ofori-Atta or his legal representatives to support claims of his alleged incapacitation or inability to return to Ghana.

“We wish to place on record that neither Mr Ofori-Atta nor his lawyers have submitted any such letter to the OSP,” read the statement.

According to the OSP, the only correspondence received from Ofori-Atta’s legal team was a letter informing the office of a change in his medical condition—based solely on their assertion.

“It is notable that this alleged hospital letter has been circulated through the media rather than submitted to the law enforcement agency actively investigating him and responsible for decisions regarding his return to Ghana,” the OSP stated.

The Special Prosecutor’s office further stressed that, to date, no certified medical records or documentation from any recognised hospital authority have been provided to support claims that Ofori-Atta is medically unfit to travel.

Ofori-Atta was declared a wanted person by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on Monday after missing the June 2 deadline.

This decisive action follows his failure to appear in person at the OSP’s headquarters by the stipulated deadline, violating an earlier agreement that saw his temporary removal from the wanted list.

The OSP declared Ofori-Atta a “fugitive from justice” in February 2025, citing his repeated non-compliance with summons for questioning regarding multiple corruption allegations.

According to the OSP, the issues being probed include his involvement in contracts with Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) for revenue assurance, issues surrounding the National Cathedral project, and other financial dealings during his tenure as Finance Minister between 2017 and 2024.
