Ghana fans in Toronto celebrated after the Black Stars opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a victory over Panama, despite a tense match that kept supporters on edge until the final whistle.
Footage filmed on Wednesday shows fans adorned in Ghana’s national colours, cheering and celebrating the victory outside the Toronto Stadium.
“It was a hard-fought victory. You know from when the draw was made, we all thought Panama was going to be a walkover,” said a fan. “At a point, we’re sitting at the edge of our seats.”
He called the match a ‘do-or-die game’ that the Black Stars needed to win.
Another supporter expressed relief after Ghana found a late winner.
“I’m so so happy that we got an extra time because you know, the Panama we thought they were gonna win back. Thank God we won,” she added.
“[It’s] a super, super, super big victory. That’s all what matters. In the World Cup, the biggest game in the world,” another supporter said.
Ghana secured the result without veteran midfielder Thomas Partey, who missed the match after Canadian authorities denied his application for a temporary resident visa.
Partey is awaiting trial in the United Kingdom on charges including rape and sexual assault. He has pleaded not guilty.
Ghana’s win places the Black Stars in a strong position ahead of upcoming Group L matches against England and Croatia, both of which will be played in the United States.
