Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been appointed to lead the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Election Observation Mission (EOM) to Benin’s presidential election next month, a statement confirmed on Tuesday.
According to the statement from the office of the former Ghanaian leader, Nana Akufo-Addo will lead a balanced and multidisciplinary delegation from member states made up of diplomats, electoral experts, representatives of national electoral commissions, members of the ECOWAS Parliament, and the Council of the Wise, as well as officials from the ECOWAS Court of Justice.
“The Economic Community of West African States has appointed Ghana’s former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as head of its election observer mission to the forthcoming presidential election in the Republic of Benin, scheduled for April 12, 2026,” read the statement.
The former Ghanaian leader is expected to arrive in Cotonou, the national capital, on April 8 to begin the election observation and return to his homeland a week later.
The people of Benin voted in a parliamentary election to select members of the National Assembly on Jan. 11 this year, and the April 12 poll is to elect a leader to replace outgoing president Patrice Talon.
The two main contenders for the presidential race are incumbent finance minister Romuald Wadagni and opposition candidate and seasoned politician Paul Hounkpe. Enditem
