Black Star Square erupted on Tuesday night as thousands of Ghana fans watched the Black Stars hold one of the tournament’s favourites – England – to a goalless draw at the 2026 World Cup.
Footage shows supporters packed into the open-air fan zone in Ghana’s red, gold and green, following the match on giant screens. The crowd roared through tackles and clearances before celebrating at the final whistle.
“The game, it was fantastic for Ghana, because I thought definitely they would score us, but we thank Allah, it was a draw,” said a fan.
Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare was central to the result, making key saves to keep England out as the Black Stars defended deep against a side featuring Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice.
“We told England that we are coming with our full defence, and today the boys did everything for me. You could see the defence, everything was spectacular, everything was good, everything was 100 per cent, in fact, applause to them, applause to them. They really did a good job,” said another fan.
“I’m more than excited, because before we come watch the ball, people tell us, say Ghana no go fit stand England, but look at here, even draw we are happy,” added a Ghanian supporter.
There was also controversy away from the match itself, as England’s Djed Spence also appeared to be the only England player not to shake Thomas Partey’s hand before the match. Partey denies allegations of rape and sexual assault in the UK.
England opened their campaign with a 4-2 win over Croatia, while Ghana beat Panama 1-0. The draw leaves both sides on four points after two Group L matches, with Croatia on three and Panama eliminated.
Ghana face Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27, while England meet Panama at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on the same day.
