Egypt fans share joy and heartbreak as team eliminated in epic Argentina comeback win

Egypt fans experienced moments of joy and then heartbreak on Tuesday, as they watched the Pharaohs’ clash with Argentina in the World Cup Round of 16.

Footage captured at the New Administrative Capital near Cairo shows Egyptian supporters of all ages gathered in a square to watch the match, which ended with a 3-2 victory for Argentina.

The video features scenes of celebration as Egypt scored twice to race into a two nil lead while having another controversially ruled out, before the mood turned to disappointment after Argentina’s comeback led by star Lionel Messi.

“Honestly, our national team delivered an impressive performance. It was a performance that made us proud, regardless of the result. Best of luck to the team, and God willing, the future will be better. You [the Egyptian players] made us proud, no matter what,” fan Ahmed Abdel Sattar said.

This is the fourth time Egypt has qualified for the World Cup, but it is the first time in its history that it has reached the Round of 16.

The 2026 World Cup is the first edition to feature 48 teams, and the first to be jointly hosted, with the United States, Canada, and Mexico sharing the honour. The tournament will take place from 11 June to 19 July, with 16 host cities across North America.
