Argentines flood Buenos Aires Obelisk as 3-2 comeback against Egypt sends Albiceleste into World Cup quarters

Thousands of Argentine fans packed the area around the Obelisk in Buenos Aires on Tuesday to celebrate the dramatic 3-2 victory by the Albiceleste over Egypt and qualification for the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup.

Footage shows Argentina fans in light blue and white jerseys waving flags, beating drums, and lighting flares as the downtown city erupts in joy after the comeback.

The scenes continued for several hours along 9 de Julio Avenue and the surrounding area, where thousands of people celebrated after a match Argentina began two goals down before winning in stoppage time.

“Well, it (the match) was heart attack material, heart attack material. I couldn’t believe I was suffering like this against Egypt. And honestly, I was losing faith. But suddenly we came back and stamped our authority again,” shared fan Mauro.

For many supporters, the gathering once again reflected the Obelisk’s symbolic role as a national meeting point during major sporting triumphs.

“[The Obelisk] is something that brings all the people together and it is the usual meeting point. Argentines come to celebrate unity above all,” Mauro added.

The comeback was also experienced by fans as an emotional roller coaster.

“Crazy. We were kind of down, but in the final stretch, we were surprised because they scored three goals out of nowhere. I mean, crazy,” said Tamara.

Nahuel Florez remarked, “If an Argentine doesn’t suffer, he’s not Argentine, so we’re really happy.”

With the victory, Argentina advanced to the quarterfinals where it will face a Swiss team coming off a penalty shootout win over Colombia.
