Ghana has decided to formally apply for membership of BRICS, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced on Tuesday.
Mr Ablakwa said Cabinet had approved the move as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s strategy to diversify Ghana’s international partnerships and expand economic cooperation with countries in the Global South.
Speaking at a joint press briefing in Accra with visiting Indian External Affairs Minister Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the Foreign Affairs Minister said Ghana had already approached India for support with the application process.
He said joining BRICS would provide Ghana with additional economic and diplomatic options, while strengthening cooperation in areas including trade, investment, science and technology.
Mr Ablakwa stressed that Ghana’s potential BRICS membership would not mean abandoning its traditional international partners, but rather expanding its range of partnerships.
BRICS currently comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia. Enditem
