Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and national chairman hopeful, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, said on Monday that he will mobilize the grassroots to recapture power for the party in the 2028 general election.
According to him, he is currently the only person in the largest opposition party who understands the language of the grassroots, due to his background of having risen from the polling station level to the regional level.
Speaking on Accra-based Movement TV, Chairman Wontumi said the NPP lost power in the 2024 election because many of their members at the grassroots level decided to abstain from the polls because they were disenchanted with their own party.
“I am the one who understands the language of the grassroots and will mobilize them to win power for the NPP in the 2028 elections,” said the NPP national chairman hopeful.
He stressed that if voted as National Chairman of the NPP, his main focus will be with effectively mobilizing grassroots, while the flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will also work around to get the academia into the fold to ensure victory for the largest opposition party in the next general election.
The NPP National Chairman hopeful emphasized that he has never had an easy election in his political career and that he is going to work hard to ensure he wins the position to help the party return to power in 2029.
“The NDC did not win the 2024 election; it is because our base decided not to go and vote. I have never had the luxury of an easy election. Every contest has been hard-fought, and throughout my journey, the grassroots have remained my strongest pillar and greatest source of support,” said Chairman Wontumi.
Responding to critics about his current court case and possible negative effects if found guilty, the Ashanti Regional Chairman is not perturbed by the development because great men in history went through very torrid times, and he has learned great lessons since his party lost political power.
He added, “All these trials and tribulations have taught me invaluable lessons. They have strengthened my character, deepened my appreciation for life’s challenges, and made me a more humble person today.”
The NPP is set to hold a national-level election to elect its executive and other persons who have expressed interest in the chairmanship slot, including Bernard Antwi Boasiako, former Chairman Paul Afoko, former General Secretary John Boadu, and former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko.
