Nigeria women, Morocco men claim Africa’s LA28 beach volleyball quota places

Nigeria’s women and Morocco’s men have claimed Africa’s beach volleyball quota places for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics after taking the continental titles in Alexandria on Saturday.

Footage shows male and female players battling on the sand as spectators watch and cheer from the stands. Nigeria’s women celebrate with their national flag, while Morocco’s men’s team and technical staff gather with theirs.

Esther Onyinye Mbah and Pamela Miyoum Bawa beat Morocco’s Alexandra Erhart and Nora Nezha Jihane Darrhar 2-0, 21-18, 21-11, in the women’s final at Abu Heif Beach.

“I am very excited today for the win. I am giving my soul to Almighty God, because I put all my faith and trust in Him. And also I’m putting in hard work. I’ve been training extra to be able to qualify for the Olympics. Here I am today, I am very happy, I am delighted,” Bawa said afterwards.

Morocco’s Zouheir Elgraoui and Soufiane El Gharouti followed with a 2-0 victory over Algeria’s Kallouche Mohamed-Islem and Ayyoub Dekkiche, winning 21-19, 21-12 to take the men’s crown.

Morocco’s victory secured the country’s men’s quota place for LA28 and saw it retain the African title.

“Thank God for the World Cup and Olympics’ qualification to be hosted by the United States. The game was good against a strong team who made it to the final despite an injury to one of their players. It was a hard-fought match,” Elgraoui noted.

“Honestly, the match was not easy, and we gave our all to win,” Gharouti added.

The African Beach Volleyball Nations Championship brought teams from 28 countries to Alexandria, with the men’s and women’s champions each securing an Olympic quota place for their national Olympic committee.

Under the LA28 qualification system, the winning men’s and women’s teams at each 2026 continental championship earn one quota place for their respective NOC.
