President John Dramani Mahama has clarified that Cabinet has not approved any policy to introduce Arabic and Chinese as compulsory subjects in Ghana’s public schools.
Mahama’s comments follow public discussion surrounding proposed changes to the basic education curriculum, with concerns that foreign languages could be made mandatory.
The Ministry of Education has previously clarified that French, Arabic and Chinese would remain optional subjects under the proposed revised basic education curriculum.
The President’s clarification therefore indicates that no Cabinet decision has been taken to make Arabic or Chinese compulsory in public schools.
“No such policy has been approved by the cabinet that I chair. So let’s put that matter to rest once and for all,” President Mahama said.
The development comes amid ongoing efforts to review Ghana’s education curriculum and strengthen language learning. Enditem
