The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is staging a demonstration in Sunyani today, Wednesday, April 22, under the theme “Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna” (roughly, “We are not afraid of intimidation”). The protest is being organized by the party’s Sunyani East Constituency.
According to party officials, the march is in response to what they describe as the unwarranted arrest and harassment of some NPP members, especially the recent case involving Sunyani East Communications Officer Abubakar Yakubu (Baba Amando). The NPP says the protest is also about defending free speech and democratic rights.
The demonstration is expected to draw party supporters from the Bono Region and beyond, increasing political attention in Sunyani today.
National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye told journalists on Monday that today’s protest is a direct response to what the party considers as an emerging trend of intimidation and the criminalisation of free speech.
He said the NPP will not be cowed by what it believe as politically motivated arrests, cautioning that such actions risk undermining Ghana’s democratic gains.
“Following a series of what we consider as unwarranted arrests, the New Patriotic Party, through our Sunyani East Constituency, is organising a demonstration dubbed the “Yen Suro Ahunahuna Demo.” We are not afraid of these actions or the criminalisation of free speech. We believe that democracy is under attack,” said Nana Boakye. Enditem
