The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is holding its regional executive elections today, Saturday, August 15, 2026, as part of efforts to reorganise and strengthen the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Delegates are electing regional chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, secretaries, treasurers, organisers, women’s and youth organisers, communications officers and other executives across 15 regions. The Western North Region will hold its election on Sunday, August 16.
The polls feature several keen contests, including the Ashanti and Greater Accra chairmanship races. The exercise is expected to culminate in the election of the party’s national executives on October 3, 2026.
In the Upper West Region, voting was briefly disrupted by some delegates from Nandom Constituency, while the Ashanti regional election been keenly contested as the party will have a new chairman to replace outgoing incarcerated Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi who will be contesting the national chairmanship position.
The polls are expected to close at 2.00 p.m local time after which sorting, counting of ballots as well as declaration will be done.
The NPP, after the regional executive election will proceed on Oct. 3 this year to elect its national officers to steer the affairs of the party into the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections. Enditem
