Basic and senior high school teachers in Ghana, numbering at least 350,000, have commenced an industrial action to press home their demands, according to a statement by the leadership of the three pre-tertiary teacher unions on Friday.
According to a joint statement by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG), they are angry with the government over the delay in negotiating a new collective agreement, failure to place newly promoted teachers onto their rightful salary levels, and non-implementation of deprived area allowance.
The development, according to the teacher unions, has brought uneasy calm among the teaching fraternity across the West African country.
“The teacher unions have observed with grave concern the uneasy calm, growing tension, and agitations by teachers owing to the display of a lukewarm attitude by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD), and the feet dragging by government on the concerns of teachers, which has culminated in serious anger and agitations by the teachers,” read the statement.
It added, “In the light of the given delays, unfulfilled promises on the part of the duty bearers and the FWSC, as well as threats from the rank-and-file of our members, we the teacher unions, do stand with our members and hereby declare a nationwide industrial action effective today, Friday, Sept. 25, to press home our demands.”
Public basic and senior high schools in Ghana commenced the 2026/27 academic year a few days ago, and the action by the teachers is likely to affect some 7.65 million students. Enditem
