‘Position yourselves for power in 2028’ – Bawumia to Minority Caucus

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Wednesday urged Members of Parliament (MPs) of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to begin positioning themselves as a credible “government-in-waiting” ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Addressing the Minority Caucus in Parliament ahead of resumption of the country legislature, Dr. Bawumia said the party had completed its period of introspection following its 2024 electoral defeat and must now focus on rebuilding public confidence.

“We have finished the period of introspection. We must now position ourselves credibly as a party preparing to govern from January 7, 2029,” he told the MPs.

According to him, the conduct of NPP MPs both in Parliament and in their constituencies would influence how Ghanaians perceive the party’s readiness to return to power. He urged the Minority to project discipline, competence and unity in their parliamentary work.

Dr. Bawumia also called on the Caucus to intensify scrutiny of government policies by demanding data, budgets and measurable outcomes for official claims and programmes.

The remarks come as the NPP begins reorganising after losing the 2024 presidential election to the governing NDC. Enditem
