President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday directed the release of an amount of 300 million Ghana cedis, or 26.49 million U.S. dollars, to offer relief to persons affected by floods in Accra and surrounding communities, the presidency has confirmed.
The statement, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, said the release forms part of the government’s response to the flooding that occurred in Accra and other nearby communities.
“President John Dramani Mahama has directed the minister for finance to release 300 million Ghana cedis from the Contingency Fund to finance urgent flood relief and mitigation efforts,” read the statement.
According to the statement, half of the amount will be used to finance urgent relief efforts for flood-affected persons, while the remainder will be spent on flood mitigation measures aimed at reducing the incidence of flooding.
The Ghana president also directed the country’s armed forces and the police service to work with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and other security services in the rescue and relief operations currently ongoing.
