The three pre-tertiary Teacher unions have rejected the government’s plea to call off their nationwide strike, insisting that they want concrete action rather than promises before returning to the classroom.
The unions, comprising the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers’ Association of Ghana (PRETAG), say they will continue the industrial action until their outstanding concerns are addressed.
The unions’ position follows a meeting with Education Minister Haruna and other stakeholders over their demands, including the payment of promotion arrears for teachers who sat for the December 2025 and February 2026 exams and implementation new conditions of service.
GNAT’s Head of Salaries, Grievances and Negotiations, Isaac Baah, said the unions were no longer prepared to rely on verbal assurances.
“At the moment, we are not taking promises. We want action.”
The unions are demanding, among other things, payment of outstanding promotion arrears, automatic placement of newly promoted teachers on the appropriate salary scales, implementation of the 20% deprived-area allowance, and progress on negotiations for a new Collective Agreement.
The government says the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission is expected to continue negotiations with the unions, while a validation committee will work on data required for implementation of the deprived-area allowance. Enditem
