Togo held municipal elections on Thursday to elect 1,527 municipal councilors across the country’s 117 communes.
This marks the third municipal elections since Togo gained independence from France in 1960. Polls opened at 7:00 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) and were scheduled to close at 4:00 p.m. (1600 GMT).
To ensure security and public order on the election day, defense and security forces cast their ballots earlier on Monday.
Mayors and deputy mayors will be elected from among the newly elected municipal councilors to serve a new six-year term as the head of the 117 communes across the country.
According to the Ministry of Territorial Administration, Decentralization and Traditional Chieftaincy, the West African country has more than 4.63 million eligible voters, and a total of 12,541 polling stations were set up nationwide.
On Tuesday, the Togolese government announced the temporary closure of land borders throughout the election day to reinforce national security and ensure the smooth conduct of the elections. Enditem
