Minority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Efutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin on Thursday accused the John Mahama administration of “packing” the Supreme Court, questioning the governing National Democratic Congress’ (NDC’s) consistency on judicial appointments.
Speaking during the controversy over the vetting of three additional Supreme Court nominees, Afenyo-Markin argued that the NDC had previously described former President Akufo-Addo’s attempt to add three justices to the apex court as “court packing.” He asked what had changed now that President Mahama had nominated several additional justices.
According to him, Parliament had already approved seven Supreme Court nominees under President Mahama, and the latest three nominations would bring the number of new appointments to ten.
“Where is your principle? You have none. We so submit,” Afenyo-Markin statement before the Appointments Committee.
He stressed that the Minority’s objection was not directed at the professional credentials of the three nominees, but at what he described as the timing and broader implications of expanding the court.
The Minority subsequently walked out of the vetting after its objections were rejected by the Appointments Committee chairman, Bernard Ahiafor. Enditem
