Avernor building collapse: 2 killed, others trapped under rubble

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

Two persons have been confirmed dead with several others trapped under the rubble following the collapse of a three-storey building at Avenor in North Kaneshie, a suburb of Accra, the Ghanaian capital, early Sunday.

Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the Accra mayor, who confirmed the death to local media, said efforts were still underway to rescue other persons who may still be trapped beneath the rubble as rescue operations continue.

The structure, which was reported to be housing both residential and commercial occupants, according to eyewitnesses, collapsed suddenly in the densely populated area.

Meanwhile, emergency responders, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), are currently leading the search and rescue operation with support from other security agencies.

Fire officers say they are still working to reach sections of the collapsed structure where more victims are suspected to be trapped, and heavy-duty equipment is being deployed to aid the operation.

Authorities have urged the public to stay away from the area to allow rescue teams to work efficiently as efforts continue to locate and rescue any remaining survivors. Enditem
