The Black Queens of Ghana have been drawn in pot 3 ahead of the draw for the preliminary phase of the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup play-off tournament, according to the global football governing body on Thursday.
The draw, FIFA announced, will take place in Zurich at 14:00 local time (CEST) on Aug. 20.
According to the seeding by FIFA, Ghana is paired in pot 3 with Ecuador, while South Africa and Papua New Guinea have been placed in pot 2 with Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan making pot 1.
The six teams were seeded according to the FIFA Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking as of June 16 of this year.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 play-off tournament consists of two phases: a preliminary phase scheduled to take place during the international window starting on Nov. 24 and finishing on Dec. 5 this year, followed by a final phase, which will be held during the international window starting on Feb. 23 and finishing on March 6 next year.
The preliminary phase will see the six nations divided into three groups of two teams each, with teams from the same confederation prevented from being drawn against one another.
Each team is expected to play three matches, with the top two teams overall advancing to the final phase of the play-off tournament.
Those two teams will join the four teams that qualify directly for the final phase (two from the Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF); Venezuela from the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL); and one from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
The final phase will consist of single-match ties, with the winner of each match securing one of the last three places at next year’s global extravaganza.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 will bring the world together across eight vibrant host cities in Brazil, between June 24 and July 25 next year.
The tournament will mark the tenth edition of the world’s biggest women’s sporting event and the first to be held in South America.
Ghana last participated in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2007 in China. Enditem
