Burkina Faso, Russia agree to convene 1st intergovernmental commission session

Burkina Faso and Russia have agreed to convene the inaugural session of their intergovernmental commission as soon as possible, Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement issued Thursday.

The agreement was reached during talks between the two countries’ foreign ministers on the sidelines of the meeting of foreign ministers of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) and Russia held on Wednesday in Niamey, the capital of Niger.

The two countries signed the legal framework establishing the commission in Moscow in February. The inaugural session is expected to facilitate in-depth discussions on cooperation across various sectors.

During Wednesday’s bilateral meeting, Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traore and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reviewed cooperation in security, energy, mining, trade, and investment.

On security, Russia reaffirmed its commitment to continuing technical support by helping strengthen the operational capabilities of Burkina Faso’s defense and security forces, the statement said.

The two sides also welcomed progress in cooperation in the fields of energy, mining, trade, and investment, while agreeing to further elevate their partnership to better reflect the potential for bilateral cooperation.

Traore also welcomed Russia’s initiatives to engage African regional and subregional organizations in advancing the vision of the AES, according to the statement.  Enditem
