The Court of Appeal on Thursday unanimously acquitted and discharged former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, overturning her 2024 conviction and 10-year custodial sentence.
The three-member panel held that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt, the standard required for a criminal conviction.
Delivering the judgement on July 30th, the appellate court ruled that the trial judge had lost sight of the constitutional principle that every accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The court also criticised the prosecution’s handling of the case, concluding that the evidence presented was insufficient to sustain the convictions. A detailed 94-page judgement is expected to provide the court’s full reasoning.
Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu had been convicted by the High Court in April 2024 on multiple charges, including stealing, conspiracy to steal, causing financial loss to the state, improper payment of public funds, unauthorised commitment, and money laundering, relating to her tenure as MASLOC CEO.
Following the Court of Appeal’s ruling, those convictions and the 10-year prison sentence have been set aside, and she has been acquitted and discharged. Enditem
