Fuel prices in France climbed to fresh highs on Tuesday, piling more pressure on motorists as diesel hit a new national record and petrol remained above €2 a litre.
Footage shows customers filling up at a petrol station in Paris on Tuesday, as drivers faced prices that have risen sharply in recent weeks.
“Well, maybe I’m being cynical, but there seems to be a deliberate effort for it to be expensive, because a lot of people line their pockets when it goes up,” one local said.
The average diesel price rose to €2.33 per litre on September 15, while SP95-E10 petrol stood at €2.14 according to media reports.
“Before, I think it was around €1.60, even €1.99 is okay. But €2.30, that’s huge, it’s excessive, in fact, we can’t make a living, it’s too much,” one resident said.
“Unfortunately, all of this will favour the Chinese industry at the expense of French industry, because people are going to think electric,” another resident said.
Brent crude oil prices have surged above $100 after the US and Israel attacked Iran disrupting oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz and rattling global energy markets.
