Hundreds of football fans packed a watch party in the national capital late Tuesday as Ghana opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto.
Several supporters, who were watching the match from various locations, including pubs and giant screens mounted in parts of the city, took to cheering, singing, and erupting in celebration after Caleb Yirenkyi struck a 90th-minute winner to secure all three points for the Black Stars.
“We showed our superiority on the field with our talented youth as they ran throughout ninety minutes, and that paid off,” one supporter said.
Another fan said the team could reach an even higher level despite the hard victory.
“We think they can raise their level even further in the upcoming matches,” the supporter said. “With this momentum, we are capable of scoring more goals and going deep into the competition.”
Ghana sits in Group L alongside England, Panama, and Croatia. After the first round of matches, England tops the group after thrashing Croatia 4-2 in their opening match, while Ghana follows, with Panama and Croatia occupying the third and fourth positions, respectively, with no points.
The Black Stars will next face the Three Lions of England at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, USA, on June 23, before taking on Croatia in Philadelphia, USA, on June 27. Enditem
