The government has extended its condolences to the people of Dagbon over the passing of His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, a statement from the presidency confirmed on Monday.
The statement, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, extolled the departed Yaa Naa for bringing lasting peace to Dagbon during his reign.
“The Government of Ghana has received with profound sadness the news of the passing of His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II. On behalf of the Government of Ghana, His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama extends his deepest condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon, and the entire nation during this period of immense grief,” read the statement.
It added, “His Majesty will be remembered as a distinguished traditional ruler whose reign brought healing, reconciliation, and lasting peace to Dagbon following years of conflict. His unwavering commitment to unity, stability, and the welfare of his people created an enabling environment for development and strengthened the enduring partnership between the traditional authorities and the government in advancing progress across Dagbon and Ghana.
Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, who joined his ancestors on July 12, 2026, was the Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom.
He became the 41st Yaa Naa in January 2019 after the successful implementation of the Dagbon Peace Roadmap, which brought an end to the protracted chieftaincy conflict that divided the kingdom for years. End item
