Asante Kotoko have bounced back from their defeat to Aduana FC at home last week with a 1-0 victory over Karela United in matchday 5 of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday.
Opoku Agyemang scored the only goal of the game in the fourth minute, capping off a brilliant team move with a composed finish from a cutback.
The early goal gave Kotoko the perfect response to their disappointing 2-0 defeat to Aduana FC in their previous outing.
Despite the victory, Karela United were the better side for large spells in the second half and created several opportunities as they pushed for an equaliser.
Kotoko, however, defended resolutely, while goalkeeper Dari Aziz produced important saves to preserve his clean sheet and secure all three points for the hosts.
There were also signs of Eric Tinkler’s influence despite his recent resignation, with Kotoko showing the determination and organisation needed to respond after their defeat to Aduana.
The victory moves Kotoko up to third place in the Ghana Premier League standings, although their position could change after the remaining matches this week.
Karela United drop to ninth and will now look to respond when they face Dreams FC in their next league fixture.
Kotoko, meanwhile, will travel to face Swedru All Blacks in their next game as they look to build momentum from Thursday’s win. Enditem
