President John Dramani Mahama on Friday urged the country’s football association (FA) to persuade former Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz to take up the Black Stars coaching job on a permanent basis.
The president’s comment comes amid intense ongoing public debate in the West African country regarding the future of the former Real Madrid and Manchester United coach after being in charge for four months.
During a tour in the Volta region (province) on Friday, the Ghanaian leader stated the tactical astuteness of Queiroz has prospects for the country’s senior male football team’s ambition of winning international silverware; hence, he urges continuity after the Portuguese guided the Black Stars to a round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
President Mahama said the 73-year-old manager has laid a solid foundation that must not be disrupted ahead of the upcoming qualifying matches for the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“I’m sure if we keep this team and we persuade the coach, Carlos Queiroz, to continue to work with the team, by the time of the next AFCON and the next World Cup, we’ll have a team that can claim the championship in either of those competitions,” said Mahama.
Queiroz, who was engaged by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) 10 weeks before the start of the 2026 World Cup, led the team to edge Panama 1-0 before securing a goalless draw against the Three Lions of England.
Despite losing 2-1 to Croatia in their last Group L game, Ghana qualified for the first time from the group match since 2010 but lost 1-0 to Colombia to exit the 2026 World Cup.
Immediately after Ghana’s exit, the Portuguese tactician confirmed in a Facebook post his decision not to renew the short-term contract with the GFA.
“Football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win or you learn. I leave this journey with pride in what we have achieved but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the destination; it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions,” posted Queiroz.
Meanwhile, the GFA, since the post by the manager, has officially responded to his purported exit. Enditem
