Mahama shoots down third-term bid, says “my days are numbered”

President John Dramani Mahama has firmly dismissed suggestions that he intends to seek a third term in office, insisting that his tenure is limited by the Constitution and that he has no intention of remaining in power beyond it.

Speaking amid renewed public debate over Ghana’s presidential term limits, Mahama reportedly stated that “my days are numbered,” emphasizing that his focus is on delivering on his administration’s mandate rather than pursuing another term.

He said he wants to leave office with his legacy intact after completing his constitutional tenure.

“The people of Ghana gave me an additional one term and my focus is to complete my last term leaving a lasting legacy. I keep telling my ministers that our days in office are numbered. I have read the provision in the constitution and it is quite clear,” said President Mahama.

The President’s remarks come as three cases before the Supreme Court seek an interpretation of Article 66(2) of the 1992 Constitution regarding presidential term limits.

Although the lawsuits have fueled public discussion, Mahama has repeatedly maintained that he is committed to respecting Ghana’s constitutional two-term limit.

Mahama had previously conveyed the same position during a closed-door meeting with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders, where he reportedly rejected any proposal for a third-term bid and sought to end speculation within the party.

The NDC leadership has also publicly affirmed that the party does not support any attempt to extend the constitutional presidential term limit.
