The Agona West Municipal Assembly is to introduce door-to-door refuse collection to help deal with the problem of haphazard refuse dumping by residents in the municipality.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area, Hon. Gyamfi Odoom, disclosed this at the end of the 2-day nationwide clean-up exercise introduced by President John Dramani Mahama over the weekend.
The move, apart from making the municipality clean, will also generate revenue for the assembly, as every household will pay a small fee for refuse collection.
Addressing the participants, the MCE noted that refuse remains one of the major problems confronting the country in recent times, saying that apart from its contribution to flooding, it also poses serious health risks, including cholera and malaria, as mosquitoes turn to breed in choked gutters as a result of refuse dumped in them.
He, however, pointed out that the situation can be controlled if the people have a change of character and mindset.
Municipal Environmental Health Officer Mr. Mark Dzodzodzi advised the residents not to wait till such exercises are declared before cleaning their surroundings.
He stressed that cleanliness should be part and parcel of every individual and not to be seen as the responsibility of the government.
According to him, refuse could be a valuable resource that can generate income if handled correctly.
He urged store and shop owners to take an active part in the national cleaning exercise, as his special enforcement team he has dispatched to the municipality would arrest and prosecute all who refused to partake in the exercise.
Pharmacist and former Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the constituency, Mr. Emmanuel Kwesi Lincoln, who participated in the exercise, commended the security services in the municipality, particularly personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ghana Immigration Service, for their participation in the exercise and urged the public to emulate the voluntary spirit of the security services.
