The appointment of Portuguese national and former Real Madrid manager, Carlos Quieroz, as coach for Ghana’s male senior football national team is a strategic and experience-driven decision by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), according to a lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon, on Wednesday.

According to Abel Manomey of the Department of Education and Sports of the premier university in Ghana, the appointment of Queiroz, who is widely known for his tactical discipline, suggests a shift towards tactical awareness and efficiency.

He emphasized that the appointment of the former Portuguese coach by the Ghana Football Association is a suitable choice considering his pedigree and the state of the Black Stars.

“The appointment of Carlos Queiroz reflects a strategic and experience-driven decision by the Ghana Football Association. Queiroz is widely known for his tactical discipline, defensive organization, and structured approach to the game. At this stage, I believe Carlos Queiroz is a suitable choice. As a player, I recognize the value of these qualities, especially for a team like Ghana that has sometimes struggled with consistency and game management,” Manomey told Ghana Eye Report.

He explained that Ghana currently needs a coach who can organize the team effectively and deliver consistent performances, particularly in competitive fixtures.

The university lecturer who touted the credentials of Queiroz further emphasized that the success of the Portuguese in his new role will largely depend on his ability to adapt quickly to the Ghanaian culture and build strong relationships with the players.

“His methodological approach aligns with modern coaching principles, including structured training, opponent analysis, and strategic planning. However, his success will depend on his ability to adapt to the Ghanaian football culture, build strong relationships with players, and effectively integrate both local and international talents,” he added.

Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Manomey stressed that he was looking up to the new coach leading the Black Stars to progress beyond the group stages, a feat that has eluded Ghana in the 2014 and 2022 World Cups that it participated in.

“Looking ahead to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the minimum expectation should be progression beyond the group stage. More importantly, I expect a team that demonstrates tactical maturity, mental resilience, and the ability to compete effectively against top footballing nations,” Manomey further stated.

The GFA appointed Carlos Queiroz last week to replace former coach Otto Addo after unimpressive performances by the Black Stars in recent times. Enditem
