Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin on Thursday directed the committee handling the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, widely referred to as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill to present its report for consideration and passage before Parliament adjourns its current meeting.
Addressing the House when Parliament resumed sitting on May 21, Bagbin stressed the urgency of advancing the bill.
“In view of the significance of the bill and the need to advance the legislative process, I urge the committee to present its report for consideration and passage by the House before the end of this meeting,” said Rt. Hon. Bagbin.
He also acknowledged public concerns over delays in the legislative process and noted that the committee had already completed stakeholder consultations and public hearings.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill was previously passed by the country’s Parliament in February 2024 but did not become law after former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo withheld assent pending Supreme Court challenges.
The bill later expired with the dissolution of the 8th Parliament and was reintroduced in 2025.
Speaker Bagbin has repeatedly indicated his commitment to seeing the legislation passed, describing it as reflective of Ghanaian cultural and family values. Enditem
